I’m talking about the “rules” governing how magick works. I’m not talking about rules of conduct, of course. I would never presume to enforce my structure on anyone … but it gets quite frustrating when I constantly see, “rules don’t matter, do whatever you want” kind of posts. I know this kind of structured approach to magick and magickal theory isn’t for everyone, and I admit there is a part of me that envies those who feel their instinct is strong enough that they feel justified in ignoring centuries of passed down magickal wisdom. This is all because my personality is such that I appreciate structure - For me, this structure is what allows me to be creative this structure is what gives my creativity added intrinsic (versus subjective) value this structure is what allows others to analyze my work and glean some understanding as to what I’m attempting to accomplish this structure is what helps me be able to determine the difference between magickal workings, and mundane correlation. Just like with language, once you learn the building blocks of how things go together you can create remarkable things and even create brand new things no one has seen before … but if all you’re doing is stringing random letters together without any respect for those building blocks, well. There is creativity, and then there’s gibberish.
If I did not have this more structured (dare I say, prescriptive?) foundation, I would be completely turned off by the flood of, “ you can do whatever you want” type posts I keep seeing more of recently. I have to say, I honestly feel very fortunate to have had Wizardry be my introduction to the magick community.
